The Nine-spotted Ladybug was once thought to be extinct until a child discovered one.
Help from the general public is essential to conservation efforts. This student learned about the native nine-spotted ladybug in class, and his discovery kickstarted major funding for the research and conservation of the ladybug species.
Entomologists at Cornell can identify the different species, but there are too few of them to sample in enough places to find the really rare ones. The community, especially New York residents, can help by uploading ladybug sightings to Ninespot’s citizen monitoring program.
Ninespots is an iniative derived by the Lost Ladybug Project at Cornell University.
